Agrobank Tanjung Manis Accelerates Sarawak’s Transformation Into A Cashless Future



SARAWAK, 22 JUNE 2024 – Agrobank is leading the charge towards promoting a cashless society in Sarawak with the recent launch of its Cashless Community Programme in Tanjung Manis, Sibu. This CSR-driven initiative aims to advance financial inclusion in Sarawak by revolutionizing the digital payment systems and cashless transactions, benefiting all segments of society especially underserved communities in rural areas.

In addition to empowering rural communities, and small and micro-business owners, the Agrobank Cashless Community Programme is revolutionizing the way transactions are conducted with its innovative DuitNow QR feature. This cutting-edge tool provides customers with a lightning-fast, secure, and seamless transaction experience, paving the way for a new era of financial efficiency.With these transformative advantages, Agrobank is not only aiding small and micro-business owners in efficiently managing their operations but also propelling them toward greater businesssuccess.

Agrobank’s President and CEO, Dato’ Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin, said, “Agrobank’s unwavering commitment towards creating a cashless society through digital economy forms the bedrock of our transformative cashless community initiative. By partnering with the state government, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), PayNet, and other key government agencies, we are poised to boost digital payment systems, embedding a robust cashless ecosystem at the heart of Sarawak’s economy. This united effort is set to ignite significant economic growth across diverse sectors, transcending traditional banking to profoundly impact the agriculture sector and the entire food supply chain.

At the ceremony, Agrobank presented a symbolic cheque for RM869,000 in Dana Skim Mikro Sarawak (SKMS) funds to 25 entrepreneurs in the Tanjung Manis district, aimed at assisting B40 groups and providing relief to SMEs affected by the economic repercussions of the COVID[1]19 pandemic. The cheque handover ceremony was graced by Yang Berbahagia Datuk Haji Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources & Urban Development, Sarawak, alongside Encik Mohamed Iqbal, Board of Director of Agrobank. The mock cheque was received by Rahayu Binti Badawi and Abang Mohammad Iswandy Bin Abang Hashim on behalf of the beneficiaries.

Agrobank underscored its commitment to supporting the welfare of the local community in Sarawak during the event by announcing an RM2 million contribution to its Takaful Kasih Plus Protection Plan. The mock cheque was presented by Encik Abdul Halek bin Abdullah, Agrobank’s Regional Director for Sarawak, to Majlis Peniaga dan Penjaja Tanjung Manis,highlighting the Bank’s dedication to enhancing financial security in the region.

Agrobank also presented zakat amounting to RM5000 to 100 asnaf in Tanjung Manis. The mock cheque was handed over by Datuk Haji Len Latiff, alongside Encik Mohamed Iqbal bin Mohamed Iqbal.

Earlier, the event began with the officiating ceremony of Agrobank’s Tanjung Manis Kiosk, which has started operations since May 2023 to serve the financial needs of the local and rural. Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah added, “The launch of Agrobank’s Tanjung Manis Kiosk exemplifies our dedication to uplift the community’s well-being and fuel economic growth in Sarawak, particularly for the underserved segments. Tanjung Manis Kiosk is poised to become a central financial hub for the district, benefiting not only its residents but also the neighbouring areas like Kuala Rajang, Jerijeh, and Belawai.

Since its inception, the kiosk has facilitated the creation of over 500 new accounts, underscoring its crucial role in advancing financial inclusivity and economic resilience throughout Sarawak with reliable banking solutions. As such, we will continue to support the state government’s initiatives to foster a robust cashless ecosystem, driving sustainable economic growth and prosperity for the region.”
